Vintage Weekend Getaway

Everything old is new again in Wayne County! Indiana’s storied Antique Alley runs along U.S. 40/the Old National Road between Richmond and Knightstown, rolling out an immense selection of more than 1,000 antique dealers, shops and boutiques all told. If your idea of a good time involves hunting for buried treasures, set a course for the hub of the whole attraction — Centerville and Cambridge City.

A true picker’s paradise, Cambridge City is home to 11 different antique shops and malls within a three-block Main Street stretch accented by gorgeous plantings and murals. With 90 different vendors, wide aisles and two levels to explore, the National Road Antique Mall makes a great spot to dive right in. Zig-zag across the street to Vinton House Antiques, then continue west to hit Building 125. High Hats Antique Mall carries a diverse inventory of collectibles and primitives.

Journeying east into Centerville, you’ll find even more hidden gems to consider at the expansive Centerville Antique Mall, Black Sheep Antiques and mother/son-owned Wheeler’s Antiques. Stop by Lavender & Sage, offering live plants alongside home & seasonal decor and then to The Village Forager to energize yourself with a local coffee along with homemade gifts, organic products, and an assortment of other shopping must-haves.  Then venture to Warm Glow Candle Company to discover a shopping mecca full of candles, home decor, Indiana wines, and more!

At some point, you’ll need to take a break from shopping to refuel. Fortunately, the western end of Wayne County offers plenty of great options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lumpy’s Café in Cambridge City is famous for its biscuits and gravy, its classic Indiana pork tenderloin sandwiches and homemade large cinnamon rolls. No. 9 Grill makes the most of its home within a handsome historic brick building. In Centerville, 5 Arch Brewing Co. proposes tasty burgers and pub grub to wash down with cold pints of craft beer.

Why rush? Make an overnight or a weekend of your antiquing excursion — Cambridge City offers several accommodations right in the heart of all the action. The Inn at High Hats maintains a cozy deluxe private suite above the antique mall with a fully appointed kitchen and a charming parlor space. Also in Cambridge City, the Lofts on Main proposes two airy luxury spaces in a renovated 1890s building, both decked out with modern amenities, full kitchens and washer/dryer access.
