Learn more about the region through the fascinating exhibits and displays at the Wayne County Historical Museum, a repository for the extensive globally sourced collections of local maven Julia Meek Gaar. Don’t miss the chance to view one of the two authentic Egyptian mummies in Indiana, then drive across town to see the other — along with a dinosaur fossil, live reptiles and anthropological artifacts — at Joseph Moore Museum on the Earlham College campus.

At one point considered the “Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad,” the Levi and Catharine Coffin House and interpretative center in Fountain City is a must-see. This Indiana State Museum historic site offers a moving glimpse into the lives of the more than 1,000 freedom seekers who took refuge here, as well as the Coffins themselves.
