Explore the winter wonderland of Wayne County

The days are colder and the nights are longer, but that’s no excuse to feel stuck inside. Bundle up and check out Richmond and Wayne County in the winter. Bonus — fewer crowds make December and January the perfect time to get outside and explore!
Sledding down Roosevelt Hill at beautiful Glen Miller Park on U.S. 40 is a seasonal Richmond rite of passage. As soon as there’s decent snow on the ground, families load up the sleds and head to this local landmark for downhill runs. For a slightly more structured adventure, find Valley’s Edge in New Paris just over the Ohio state line and spend a fun few hours snowtubing on a speedy 1,000-foot-long hill.

January 26-27, Richmond is transformed into a Winter Wonderland during the annual Meltdown Winter Ice Festival. Live music, food trucks and an interactive outdoor play zone all await you along with fierce ice carving competitions. The stunning ice sculptures remain on display for viewing up and down the Main Street Promenade for as long as Mother Nature allows.

If the cold never bothered you anyway, why not bundle up for a crisp winter hike? Peaceful routes to wander include Hayes Arboretum, the Cardinal Greenway through the scenic Whitewater Gorge past the icy Thistlethwaite Falls, and the Conifer Tree Trail at Centerville’s Cope Environmental Center. Meanwhile, Antique Alley through Centerville, Cambridge City and Hagerstown offers an entirely different kind of trail to discover.

Before heading out or at the end of outdoor activities, ward off any chill with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate at local spots like Roscoe’s Coffee Bar and Tap Room, Café Neo, Bismarck Donuts and Coffee and Artisans and Java next to the Warm Glow Candle Outlet on I-70.
