Step back in time at these Wayne County attractions
Don’t we all wish we could turn back the clock? Richmond and Wayne County offer several opportunities to travel decades back in time, and in some cases even more than a century! Put some of these retro destinations on the itinerary for your next visit.
See how Richmond residents rolled back in the day at the Model T Museum in the Historic Depot District. Here, you’ll get a look at more than 40 vehicles produced between 1908 and 1927 on display across two buildings, as well as a Pietenpol airplane, a working 1920s-era repair shop and lots of memorabilia. New this year, the “Henry Ford and his Impact on America” short film presented by the Henry Ford Heritage Association screens in the on-site theater room.

If you’ve got motor oil in your blood, stop in the Wayne County Historical Museum to admire an impressive collection of antique automobiles and the very first Davis airplane made in 1929, all manufactured right here in Richmond.

Arts-minded visitors will want to beeline to the Cambridge City Public Library to ooh and aah over the creative output of the Overbeck sisters, nationally famous for the pottery they produced between 1911 and 1955. The dedicated one-room museum exhibits cups, bowls, vases, figurines and other precious pieces.

Take a stroll through Richmond’s musical heritage at the Gennett Records Walk of Fame in the scenic Whitewater River Gorge. Running alongside the old Starr Piano Company site, an informative series of plaques commemorates a who’s who roster of artists who recorded in town on the Gennett Records label during its early 20th century heyday. Artie Shaw, Gene Autry, Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, Jelly Roll Morton, Guy Lombardo, Louis Armstrong, Lawrence Welk — the gang’s all here, and then some!

Firehouse BBQ and Blues also showcases its own Gennett relics and artifacts for guests to enjoy along with plates of outstanding brisket, pulled pork and smoked sausage. Can’t get enough? Book an overnight stay at the Gennett Mansion Carriage House, a luxuriously appointed two-bedroom Airbnb accommodation directly behind Henry and Alice Gennett’s stately Main Street home.
