72 Hours in Richmond & Wayne County, Indiana

To help you make the most of a 3 day weekend, this inspiration guide features top spots for food, fun, and a good night’s rest.
Day 1
Get your bearings at the Old National Road Welcome Center and Gift Shop, where you can pick up maps, ideas and a free Chocolate Trail passport to score treats and sweet deals from retailers throughout the county all weekend long. (Famous for their chewy soft caramels, Abbott’s Candies in Hagerstown has been a Wayne County institution since the 1890s.)
After a leisurely drive, reward yourself with dinner at local eatery from Richmond’s diverse lineup of restaurants, cafes, wineries and craft breweries. The Olde Richmond Inn serves elegant cuisine in a lovingly restored 1892 residential home, or feast on soulful pastas and pizzas at Galo’s Italian Grill.

Settle in for a restful night at the accommodations of your choice. Richmond and Wayne County maintain a wide range of welcoming options to choose from, including hotels, B&Bs, one-of-a-kind Airbnbs and campgrounds.
Day 2
Fuel up for adventures with coffee from a local café — Roscoe’s Coffee Bar, Café Neo, 5th Street Coffee and Bagels, or Bismarck Donuts and Coffee are all tasty options. Antique Alley runs along U.S. 40 offering ripe territory for treasure hunters to spend the morning (or all day) “picking” to their hearts’ content through Centerville, Cambridge City and beyond.

Arts-minded visitors and history buffs have plenty to consider as well. Pay a visit to the Richmond Art Museum, the only facility of its kind located within a working high school, then learn all about the surprising history of this east-central Indiana region at the Wayne County Historical Museum, where you can view one of two authentic Egyptian mummies on display in Richmond and the only ones in the entire state! (Although temporarily closed, the other mummy is housed at Joseph Moore Museum of Natural History.) While you’re out and about, keep your eyes peeled for the more than 80 large-scale works of public art that comprise the Wayne County Murals Trail.

For a laid back local flavor, try Firehouse BBQ & Blues, a must stop for some award winning BBQ! Known for its whimsically named sandwiches, Little Sheba’s in the Depot District is also a good bet, or order up a tasty tenderloin at Legends Southside Bar, the second-oldest continuously running bar in the state.
Looking to stretch your legs? Get outside and explore the Cardinal Greenway extending 62 miles from Richmond to Marion, Ind., making it the longest paved rail-trail in the state. Pick up the path at any point for an invigorating jog or a leisurely hike, or borrow a complimentary bike from Cycling and Fitness Warehouse at the trailhead to cover more ground. Hayes Arboretum and the Cope Environmental Center provide even more scenic trails through wooded territory to discover.

For dinner, sample some international flavors at global eateries like Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine, Thai Thara, El Rodeo or Yamato Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi. Or linger into the evening over creative modern food and wine at the Cordial Cork.
Day 3
After breakfast, keep the morning going and follow the footsteps to freedom at the Levi and Catharine Coffin State Historic Site and Interpretative Center. This historic site played a critical role in the Underground Railroad, assisting more than 2,000 fugitive slaves during their harrowing journeys north to freedom.
If cars are your passion, you’ll want to stop by the Model T Ford Museum to admire the collection of 1908 to 1927 vehicles on display and the authentic working 1920’s garage and machine shop.
