Hike, Bike or Float through Wayne County this Summer
Summer has finally arrived, and there’s no better time of year to go outside and play. Fortunately, Richmond and Wayne County offer plenty of ways to enjoy the great outdoors. Stay hydrated and don’t forget the sunscreen!
Hike
Lace up your hiking boots for fresh air adventures in Wayne County. A longtime east-side landmark, the 466-acre Hayes Arboretum property offers 16 miles of idyllic hiking trails to discover. Meanwhile, Cope Environmental Center just west of Richmond in Centerville maintains three miles of trails through hardwood forest, Indiana prairie and wetlands habitats. If the weather’s not cooperating, duck into the Sustainability Education Center — recently certified as a Living Building by the International Living Futures Institute — to learn more about eco-friendly practices. Or, step onto the new Riverside Heritage Hiking Trail on the northeast side of Richmond, an easily accessible one-mile paved path through shady trees.

Bike
For those who prefer to journey on two wheels, the Cardinal Greenway is the longest paved rail trail in the state of Indiana, running 62 miles from Richmond through Muncie and all the way up to Marion. (Bonus — Cycling and Fitness Warehouse at the trailhead even offers free bike rentals.) The 7.5 miles of mountain biking trails at Hayes Arboretum are another great way to challenge yourself. Catch some air, as you challenge yourself at the City Bike Park where several lanes offer features for all skill levels.
For a more leisurely outing, experience the natural beauty of the Whitewater Gorge Trail, now linking to the Cardinal Greenway and Veterans Memorial Park via a 1/3-mile connector trail.

Float
Rent a paddleboat, rowboat, canoe or kayak at Middlefork Reservoir, and while away the day relaxing on the water with this 177-acre stream and spring fed lake. Check the calendar for free fishing days sponsored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources regularly stocks the reservoir which contains Northern Pike, Large Mouth Bass, Bluegill, Channel Catfish, a variety of Sunfish and plenty more.
