What’s New in 2023
A new year brings new experiences, and Richmond / Wayne County are serving up a veritable smorgasbord of attractions and additions to explore in 2023. Make a resolution to pay a visit!
Starting the year off with a buzz on Jan. 27 and 28, Richmond’s popular Meltdown Winter Ice Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2023 with a weekend full of spectacular ice sculptures on display and live carving demonstrations. New this year, participants can take selfies with the sculptures, then post to Instagram using the #RichmondIceArt hashtag for a chance to win winter-themed gift baskets.

Launching in February 2023, the new digital Black History Trail shares stories of Wayne County’s proud African-American heritage, from its role in the Underground Railroad movement through Gennett musical artists, entrepreneurship, art and culture. While you’re at it, make sure to stop by the Wayne County Historical Museum in June 2023 to check out their upcoming signature exhibit showcasing Wayne County Black History.

The Starr-Gennett Walk of Fame located in the scenic Whitewater River Gorge has recently gotten a makeover, boasting a refreshed look and reinstallation that makes the medallions easier to view. This easily walkable trail offers an immersive dive into the history of Richmond’s music industry and the artists who put the city on the map back in the first few decades of the 1900s.

Don’t let the cheeky name fool you. One Happy Ass Farm is serious about animal welfare. Head up to Lynn for a fun, educational tour to learn all about the rescued donkeys, goats, cats and dogs in residence. In Cambridge City, the new Red Chandelier boutique stocks an eclectic inventory of unique products and gifts, and even offers custom engraving services for a personalized touch.

Need a place to stay? Wayne County visitors are spoiled for choice with an array of new and existing accommodations to fit all budgets and comfort preferences. Opening in January, the new Comfort Suites on Richmond’s east side proposes spacious rooms with free wifi, a fitness center, hot breakfast and a pool. In the Historic Depot District, the new Speakeasy Loft settles nicely into what was once an 1865 tin shop and Prohibition-era watering hole. Sharing the same neighborhood, the Loft Highway Airbnb rental sits pretty on the 4th floor of the building by the same name. The lovingly restored 1880 Westcott Mansion will open its doors to overnight guests on Richmond’s “Millionaire Row” as an Airbnb featuring a beautiful gazebo and its own pickleball court.
