Downtown Richmond

Downtown Richmond is a jewel of urban renewal where you can visit boutiques, cafes, colorful murals, a new bike path, a park with a water feature, green space and plenty of relaxation. During a trip to Downtown Richmond, you can find people grabbing lunch, families having picnics, friends shopping, farmers setting up for the Farmers Market, food trucks arriving, people biking, artist setting up new exhibits, and an overall peaceful atmosphere. A walk through Downtown Richmond reveals the community’s rich history. You can still find elaborate windows, cornices, quoins, glazed tiles and many more architectural details. In the mid 1800’s, many retailers relocated their businesses to Downtown Richmond in order to secure new customers traveling along the Historic National Road. Downtown Richmond has a mixture of historical architecture including Italianate, Richardsonian Romanesque style, Neo-Classical and Beaux Arts influence. April 6, 1968 was a tragic day for Richmond, Indiana. A double explosion occurred at 1:47 P.M. EST in Downtown Richmond, killing 41 people and injuring more than 150. Twenty buildings in and around the site were destroyed as a direct result of the explosions.
