The community of Newport, Indiana, now known as Fountain City, was well-known in the decades before the Civil War as a place for those seeking freedom from slavery. Levi and Catharine Coffin were instrumental in providing support to freedom-seekers. But there were others who helped the Quaker couple to hide freedom-seekers and move them north. On this walking tour, we’ll discover the sites to understand how Newport worked together as part of the Underground Railroad.
