The current exhibit in the MacDowell Gallery at Reid Hospital features woodcut prints by Robin Nicholson, who grew up here in Richmond and works as an art teacher for Richmond Community Schools. Four large, hand-colored prints depict stages of grief over the loss of the artist’s mother to cancer. The series was part of Nicholson’s senior thesis project for her fine arts degree from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Additional prints in the exhibit feature Quaker Meetinghouses and other historic buildings from the local area. Robin Nicholson’s love of old buildings and interest in local history is evident in her work. In her artist statement, she writes: “My prints of historic buildings in Richmond as well as of other locations around the country and world are not exact realistic representations of what you would see out your window if you would drive by in the car. They are created from historic photos, contemporary photos, memory, and artistic license. Shrubs, trees, fences, and sidewalks change with time, but what I hope shines through in my prints is the soul of the building, the soul which was created with the sweat, blood, and tears of the craftsmen and artisans who built these magnificent buildings as well as all of those who have loved and looked after them for many years.” The MacDowell Gallery is located on the second floor of the hospital and the current exhibit will be on display through September 20.
