The National Road – the country’s first major improved highway and one of the main routes for settlers heading west in the 1800s – stretches from Maryland to Illinois and runs right through the heart of Wayne County, Indiana.
Thanks in large part to the efforts of local antique dealer Patricia McDaniel, it also is home to the annual Historic National Road Yard Sale beginning the Wednesday after Memorial Day and continuing dawn to dusk through the following Sunday. This year, the sale celebrates its 16th birthday from May 29 through June 2.
Like any yard sale, it will have everything from fine antiques to funky collectibles, useful items and items of questionable use, things to play with, things to sit on and things to eat off, not to mention things to eat.
