PERFORMING ARTS
The Richmond area enjoys a kaleidoscope of artistic
and cultural activity. The Symphony and Chorus, Civic Theatre and special
concerts offer excitement and entertainment throughout the year. The Civic
Hall Performing Arts Center offers special entertainment throughout the
year ranging from The Peking Acrobats to Country Recording Artist Victoria
Shaw. The Richmond Art Museum exhibits original works by regional, national
and internationally acclaimed artists including two galleries featuring
permanent collections specializing in Indiana art. In September, Richmond
hosts a 2-day Jazz Fest. Heralded as a weekend of traditional Jazz and
Blues, Jazz Fest celebrates Richmond's heritage as the center of the early
Jazz recording industry. Other fun activity during the event is an art
show. Music and theatre...what a nice way to top off the evening!

The Gennett Records branch of the now-defunct Starr Piano Company is well-known for its groundbreaking recordings of numerous jazz pioneers like Louis Armstrong, Hoagy Carmichael, Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington. Once located on the banks of the Whitewater River in the center of Richmond, Gennett Records also recorded many pioneers in other styles of American music. Blues artist Thomas A. Dorsey and Charley Patton, one of the earliest and most-influential Delta blues musicians, both recorded for Gennett. Fiddlin' Doc Robert, Gene Autry and Ernest Stoneman made essential contributions on the Gennett label to a nascent form of country music known today as old-time music. The Starr Piano Company opened in 1872, adding phonographs and records around 1915. Special exhibit of the Starr-Gennett Foundation is located at Charlie's Coffee Bar and Gallery, 416 N 10th St., Richmond. |
